Edward Anders was the first casualty of A Company, 1st battalion, 503d Infantry. He was also the second casualty of the 173d Airborne Brigade. Edward came over to Vietnam with the Brigade from Okinawa. We were guarding some Special Forces camp that had been hit pretty hard the week before. After about 5 days of boredom, Ed decided to make a trip wire boobie trap with a grenade. He was slicking up the pin with oil so it would come out better. In that process, he dropped the grenade while still holding on to the pin. He reached down to pick the grenade up but was to too late. He will truly be missed. Ed was from Los Angeles California.
